Sinopec completed a 3D seismic survey of its self-operated Qiongdongnan Basin in August 2009 in addition to a preliminary interpretation and analysis, said an official with the Sinopec Offshore Oil and Gas Company in Shanghai.

Speaking at Asia Offshore Operation and Development 2009, the official added that the comprehensive interpretation and explanation of the seismic data will be finished early 2010.

The Schlumberger oilfield and information services company was paid to conduct the 3D seismic survey covering an area of 1,250 square km.

In 2010, Sinopec will appraise the 8,000-plus square km basin and determine where wells will be dug using the survey. The company plans to mark three well locations in the first batch and begin drilling the first before deciding what to do next.

Sinopec will drill the first deepwater well in 2011 and possibly contract a rig from Transocean Ltd. or Husky Energy Inc., the official said. It was earlier reported that Sinopec intended to drill the first deepwater well in 2010, a year earlier than the most recent announcement indicates.
